The initiative, managed by Eni, is projected to generate 500 million cubic feet of gas daily (2.8 million tons of LNG annually).
The feedstock will be processed using the current Zohr field infrastructure in Egypt, subsequently transported and liquefied at Damietta LNG, and exported as liquefied natural gas to global markets, mainly in Europe.
Eni CEO Claudio Descalzi highlighted that the Cronos project will position Cyprus as a European gas producer and exporter, facilitating the establishment of a regional gas hub in the Eastern Mediterranean by utilizing the current energy infrastructure in Egypt.
TotalEnergies Chairman and CEO Patrick Pouyanné stated that this new gas route in the Mediterranean will enhance Europe's energy security by diversifying its LNG supply sources. He mentioned that Cronos will further enhance his company's LNG portfolio, projected to attain 60 million tonnes annually.
