As reported by Dealogic, the overall IPO volume for energy infrastructure firms in the first half of 2026 totaled $12.6 billion. This marks the highest figure for a single half of the year since the dot-com bubble's peak in late 1999 and sets a record for the year's first half.
The number of IPOs surpasses the overall amount for the entire year of 2025, when sector companies conducted IPOs valued at $4.3 billion.
The requirement to obtain vast amounts of energy for running data centers is increasingly proving to be a significant challenge for the AI sector, as reported by the FT.
"Initially, investors purchased AI-related stocks such as Nvidia. Then they understood that the chips need energy," observes Chris Dendrinos, a renewable energy analyst at RBC.
"This has emerged as a significant catalyst for interest in energy infrastructure firms."
An AI-centric data center typically uses 876,000 megawatt-hours of electricity each year, similar to the yearly usage of homes in cities such as Glasgow or Salt Lake City. A projection from the consulting firm ICF indicates that electricity demand in the US is expected to rise by 39% from 2026 to 2035, mainly driven by higher usage from data centers.
