The European Union is updating its airline ownership regulations to stop foreign investors from taking control of airlines, Reuters stated, referencing an unnamed official from Europe.

The evaluation arises as two U.S. investment firms compete for dominance over the European low-cost airline EasyJet. As per the agency's source, the amendment aims to "safeguard strategic independence" and maintain control over airlines within the bloc.

In late June, the American investment firm Castlelake revealed its plan to acquire EasyJet for £5.5 billion. In early July, the airline accepted this proposal, but subsequently received (and approved) an even more profitable offer (£5.7 billion) from a different American fund, Apollo.

Both funds, however, failed to clarify how they planned to bypass the existing regulation that mandates 51% of shares in European airlines be owned by domestic investors.
