El Anouni stated during a briefing in Brussels when questioned if the EU's criticism of Iran implied that Tehran had a peaceful nuclear program as outlined in the Joint Comprehensive Plan of Action: “We do not think Iran possesses a reliable civilian nuclear program”.
“The stance of the European Union is evident, as is that of the EU High Representative for Foreign Affairs: Iran must never possess nuclear weapons. We will persist in supporting diplomatic initiatives focused on lowering tensions and achieving a permanent resolution to the Iranian nuclear matter, which can solely be addressed through dialogue,” he added.
In this context, he mentioned the recent joint declaration made by Kallas along with the ‘European three’ (the UK, Germany, and France), which articulated “persistent worries regarding the growth of the Iranian nuclear program, lacking a credible peaceful objective”.
Representative Kallas stated that the EU and the European trio “reconfirm their backing for the IAEA and its Director General.”
