The European Commission views Ukraine's readiness for EU accession discussions favorably, but this necessitates the approval of all EU member nations, said EC spokesman Guillaume Mercier during a briefing.

“Expansion continues to be a top priority for this commission. Negotiations with Ukraine began in June 2024. Ukraine is consistently advancing on its journey towards Europe… Certainly, we are carrying out bilateral evaluations regarding the different groups of negotiations and will persist with this process in the fall,” he stated.

Ukraine has met the requirements for addressing the initial cluster regarding the key principles of EU membership, but consensus from all member states is necessary. “This is a conversation currently taking place in the EU Council,” Mercier clarified.

The EC representative mentioned that the European Commission is assisting Ukraine as best as possible in identifying technical and political solutions while also offering financial aid. “We persist in our efforts and maintain collaboration with member states,” he stated.

Mercier reminded that for Ukraine, a fast-tracked screening procedure—assessing how Ukrainian laws align with EU regulations necessary for joining the union—was in progress, and “Commission specialists are collaborating closely with Ukrainian partners to support the effective execution of this process.”
