“We propose €131 billion for defense and space. This amounts to five times more than what is planned in the existing budget, as we recognize that security is a significant concern for both citizens and states. We aim to reinforce our industrial foundation and industrial capabilities,” stated EC President Ursula von der Leyen while presenting the EU's proposed long-term financial plan in Brussels.
According to the materials for the presentation, “the long-term budget will aid in establishing a European defense union that can defend itself, communicate, and take action swiftly if required.”
The European Commission states that EU Member States and regions “will have the chance, voluntarily and aligned with regional priorities and needs, to back defense projects in their national and regional partnership plans.”
