Canadian Alberta Minister Jason Kenney called on his US counterpart to respond to the Keystone XL decision. In his view, new US President Joe Biden's executive order banning the construction of the Keystone XL oil pipeline on the border of the two countries should have proportional economic consequences.

Kenney called on the country's Prime Minister Justin Trudeau to get the decision from the US chief executive.

"Just as your government stood up for workers in the Canadian aluminium and steel industries in the wake of unfair US duties in 2018, you must take action for the sake of thousands more workers in the energy sector and their enormous contribution to the Canadian economy. I urge you to achieve proportionate economic consequences (to the US economy) in response to these unjust US actions," Kenney said in a letter to Trudeau.

At the same time, the politician notes that "an opportunity must be found to change the Keystone XL decision in the context of a broad North American energy and climate agreement."

Earlier, Trudeau spoke of Canada's disappointment with Biden's new executive order. Recall that this document blocks the construction of the Keystone XL oil pipeline at the US-Canada border.

The Keystone XL pipeline is supposed to be 1.9 thousand kilometres long. Its capacity is planned at 800,000 barrels a day. If the project is implemented, the pipeline will connect Canada's largest oil-producing province of Alberta and oil refineries on the Gulf Coast.

The project has been consistently supported by the Donald Trump administration.
