Uber Technologies has reduced its customer and driver support team by 10% as a result of adopting artificial intelligence and a worldwide organizational streamlining initiative, Bloomberg reports, referencing an internal memo.

Megha Yethatika, vice president of global customer operations at Uber, noted in the memo that the organization has become overly complex and fragmented, hindering the ability to implement advanced technologies such as AI across disjointed processes.

The report specifies that the firm revealed the layoffs on July 22. As reported by Bloomberg, remote customer service staff has been instructed to go back to the office. According to an Uber spokesperson in an email, these actions are intended to streamline operational processes, enhance face-to-face interactions, and deepen the integration of AI technologies.

"This marks the initial occasion that Uber has explicitly tied job reductions to efficiency improvements fueled by AI." According to Bloomberg, this marks the second instance of layoffs in under two months, intended to streamline the team structure.

In June, the company eliminated 23% of its HR department. The job cuts impacted fewer than 1% of its 34,000-member global staff. The agency states that they started following a shift in the leadership of the division. In May, the firm revealed intentions to reduce hiring because of AI's integration into internal operations. At the same time, Bloomberg verified that Uber continues to have more than 500 job listings available on its site.
