Bloomberg reports, referencing vessel-tracking information, that Iran did not fill any tankers with crude oil in September because of a US naval blockade. Volumes fell to zero from around 250,000 barrels daily in August. This was the first month of this kind since the conflict started in February.

Commodities analytics companies Kpler and Vortexa likewise noted no crude oil shipment volumes in the previous month. Nonetheless, Bloomberg points out that the loading data relies on satellite images and is still in a preliminary stage.

Iranian tankers frequently delay sending location signals until about two weeks into their journey, after leaving domestic waters and nearing the Strait of Malacca or the Suez Canal.

On February 28, the US and Israel initiated a military campaign targeting Iran. A result was the obstruction of the Strait of Hormuz, a crucial oil transport passage in the Middle East.

Before the onset of conflict, approximately 20% of the world's oil supplies (17–20 million barrels daily) transited through the Strait of Hormuz. Kpler observed that since mid-July, no Iranian crude oil tanker has succeeded in crossing the blockade line. In August, shipping volumes dropped by 85% relative to the start of the year.
