Venture capital fund Breakthrough Energy of Microsoft co-founder Bill Gates has invested in startup Source Global, which produces hydropanels capable of generating water from the air, reported the television channel CNBC.
The startup has already attracted $150 million; investors include BlackRock and Lightsmith investment companies and Duke Energy Holding, along with the Gates Foundation.
The hydropanel looks like a solar panel, but produces water instead of electricity. It absorbs water vapor from the air and uses solar energy to extract clean water from it. The cost of a single panel is $2,000.
"We take sunlight and air and can produce perfect drinking water almost anywhere on the planet," the company’s head told the reporters. He recalled that the World Health Organization estimates that by 2025, "half of the world's population will live in water-stressed areas."
