Several automakers have joined forces to create a network of electric stations near European highways. The first 20 charging stations for electric vehicles Ionity should be built by the end of 2017.

Six autoconcerns founded a joint venture to build stations for rapid charging of electric vehicles. Ionity company, created by German automakers BMW, Daimler, Volkswagen, Audi and Porsche, as well as American Ford, has been opened, said its founders in a statement.

It is planned to install the first 20 stations on the autobahns of Germany, Austria and Norway as early as in this year. Their number is expected to be increased to 400 by the end of 2020 all over Europe.

Ionity gas-filling columns will be able to charge different batteries regardless of the manufacturer thanks to a standard plug.

Motorists will have the opportunity to timely and quickly charge electric vehicle batteries. Thus, automakers are fulfilling an important condition for many of their car models to be launched in the next decade to find buyers.

At the same time, scientists have calculated how many public charging stations for electric vehicles should appear in Germany, so that a million electric cars appear on the roads of the country. It is necessary to build at least 35 thousand public electric stations, as well as 4 thousand fast charging stations, which can be used, for example, while visiting stores, reports Reuters. Now there are about 570 such stations in Germany.
