On April 1, the tax on petrol and diesel will be lowered by about AUD 0.26 ($0.18) per liter, as announced by Australian Prime Minister Anthony Albanese during a press conference in Canberra. As a result, filling a 65-litre tank with petrol will cost around AUD 19 less. The measure will remain in effect for a period of three months.
"The longer the war goes on, the more severe its effects will become," Albanese stated.
The government will also lower the tax on heavy vehicles for three months and delay the planned tax hike for an additional six months.
The average cost of one liter of diesel in the country exceeded AUD 2.82 last week, and petrol reached almost AUD 2.40, as reported by the Australian Institute of Petroleum. Both were 20-year highs. Fuel prices in rural regions have climbed even more, causing significant difficulties for farmers and companies that transport goods between cities.
