The strategy of the Donald Trump administration regarding South Korea has prompted the US's Asian partners to reconsider how much they depend on Washington for security, Politico states, referencing diplomatic sources in the area. This week, the US president declared a decrease in joint military drills with South Korea and expressed his desire to meet with North Korean leader Kim Jong-un.

One of the sources indicated to the publication that Asia should anticipate a reversal of self-sufficiency. The source stated that "American military technology is still unmatched, and for nations already reliant on it, shifting or diversifying is neither practical nor economical." Nevertheless, those capable will allocate greater resources to autonomous defense to eventually liberate themselves from the US protective shield.

South Korean Foreign Minister Cho Hyun stated on Wednesday that the government was not informed beforehand about the US decision to reduce the length of joint exercises by a week. He observed that President Lee Jae Myung is working to enhance communication with the Americans. However, these negotiations "are becoming more and more complex," a different source informed Politico. The source added that the Defense Ministry and U.S. forces in Korea are taken aback and currently lack specific plans.

A diplomatic source also informed Politico that the most recent indications suggest the US is pulling back from the conflict involving Asian nations and North Korea, though collaboration evidently remains ongoing. However, the crucial issue is not the intentions of the US, but rather their capacity to uphold the pledged level of presence.
