Senator Flávio Bolsonaro, who lost in the second round of Brazil’s presidential election, has escaped to the U.S., according to Reuters, referencing three sources. The U.S. State Department is preparing to issue entry visas for him and his family. A spokesperson for the State Department told the agency: “Visas will be granted to Flávio Bolsonaro and his family, allowing their entry into the United States.”

CNN reports, referencing an advisor to the U.S. president, that President Donald Trump granted permission for the senator’s entry. An insider informed the network on October 27 that the politician was already in the U.S.

The Brazilian media source O Globo stated that the senator and his relatives reached Miami, where his brother, Eduardo Bolsonaro, welcomed him. This was verified to the publication by the politician’s supporters and individuals connected to his family. These sources indicate that the senator’s sibling assisted in organizing his arrival with U.S. officials.

O Globo further mentioned that in a gathering with supporters and legal advisers on October 26, Flávio Bolsonaro seemed troubled and voiced concerns about the possibility of arrest. Despite being encouraged to stay in Brazil and take charge of the opposition as Jair Bolsonaro’s successor, he opted to depart instead.

On October 25, Bolsonaro was ordered by Brazil’s Supreme Court to return his passports within 24 hours and was banned from exiting the country, as reported by the Brazilian news outlet G1. The decision was made during an inquiry into money laundering, where both the senator and his attorney, Willer Tomaz, are involved. Each rejects all accusations.
