“Unless stated otherwise in this announcement, all imports of semi-finished copper products and items (…) will incur a 50% tariff,” the announcement signed by Trump and released by the White House on Wednesday reads.

The US President stated that, in his view, the actions being implemented will bolster the nation’s security.

The Secretary of Commerce has determined that the reliance of the United States on foreign copper suppliers poses a national security risk that other nations could leverage to destabilize American industry. Moreover, this scenario highlights the susceptibility of the United States to interruptions in supply chains and economic fluctuations (…). “This also presents a danger to the American military-industrial complex,” the document notes.

The text adds that Trump proceeded with implementing tariffs because he concurred with this evaluation.
