This is the first-ever ban that is applicable to computer software.

“The use of commercial spyware presents tangible and growing counterintelligence threats and risks to the United States, including endangering safety of federal employees and their families,” reads the release.

The document claims that programs created by dubious firms that permit remote access to electronic media in order to collect information from them or alter them without the owner’s consent are used by other states to violate human rights, impose restrictions on freedoms, spy on dissidents and human rights activists, and spy on citizens without necessary legal justification.
