The cost to cross the Turkish straits from the Black Sea to the Mediterranean Sea has increased, Turkey’s Ministry of Transport and Infrastructure stated. The charge will rise by 8.3%, from $4.08 to $4.42.

According to the 1936 Montreux Convention, the cost of crossing the straits is determined using the gold franc. The value of the gold franc at the time of the signing was $0.8. Turkey’s control over the Straits was reinstated by the Convention.

The passage price was already increased by five times by the Turkish government in October, reaching $4.08. The basic cost of gold francs in tax and fee ratios (lighthouse, demolition, and sanitary inspection) is now fixed at $4.42 per net tonnage of a merchant ship.
