At that, coal plants produced 15% additional electricity compared to wind plants in January-April.

To compare, wind plants in the United States only generated 1.3 GWh of electricity in March 2004, whereas coal plants generated 154.3 GWh. In the year 2000, the nation had 2.4 GW of wind power, but by April 2024 this had significantly risen to 150.1 GW. Meanwhile, coal-fired electricity capacity dropped from 315.1 GW to 177.1 GW.

Over 14 GW of fresh wind power has been added in the United States between 2020 and 2021; however, the growth pace has decelerated, with an anticipated 7.1 GW in 2024.
