According to The Wall Street Journal, citing sources, institutional investors have requested that Anthropic, the creator of the AI model Claude, reduce the valuation at which it intends to initiate an initial public offering (IPO) in the U.S.

The report indicates that investors have encouraged Anthropic and its advisers to target a valuation between $1.5 and $1.6 trillion. The WSJ points out that this is much lower than the $2 trillion amount mentioned in recent discussions.
Investors highlighted multiple worrying elements, such as market fluctuations and increasing anxiety about excessive concentration of funds in the AI sector, according to the WSJ.
They also emphasized the public opposition to the building of data centers, along with the ambiguity regarding when hyperscalers like Amazon and Meta will start to make a profit from their AI investments.
According to the WSJ, Anthropic has not yet determined its target valuation for the IPO or the quantity of shares it plans to sell. In August, the Financial Times reported that certain investors were expecting a $2 trillion valuation for Anthropic. Nonetheless, after the company’s financial results were presented at an investor day in October, those expectations were adjusted to $1.5 trillion, according to Reuters.
