Within the company, 39-year-old Driscoll will act as a senior consultant for national security and modernization.

A statement from OpenAI on Monday noted that his role will involve guiding partners in public and private sectors, along with working alongside government, academic, and industry leaders to promote initiatives for the advancement of “democratic AI.”

“The U.S. possesses a unique chance to collaborate with other countries to promote democratic AI,” remarked OpenAI CEO Sam Altman, reflecting on the announcement.

Dan Driscoll stepped down from his role as Secretary of the Army in August due to conflicts with Pentagon leader Pete Hegseth.
