“Generally, less powerful presidents tend to express their frustrations and take bold actions in foreign policy,” a senior military official from Europe remarked to the outlet.

The official mentioned that assaults on NATO are a “constant element of Trump’s perspective.

Various sources that talked to Politico voiced worries that if the Democrats gain a majority in the U.S. Congress, they could restrict Trump’s capacity to advance his domestic agenda. They believe this may cause the president to concentrate more on global issues, striving to “solidify his legacy” via foreign policy.

In particular, three diplomats proposed that Trump could diminish the U.S. military footprint in Europe. They also worry that Trump might reduce U.S. contributions to NATO, limit the PURL (Prioritized Ukraine Requirements List) process—which aids NATO allies in acquiring U.S. weaponry for Ukraine—and possibly enhance relations with Russia.

In reply, White House staff member Olivia Wales informed the outlet that “No one has accomplished more for NATO than President Trump.” She mentioned, however, that the American leader still feels unhappy about the alliance’s insufficient backing concerning the conflict with Iran.
