The ruling directs Bayer to pay a fine of $2 billion and compensation of $65 million, stated the company.

Bayer has long been fending off allegations concerning the Monsanto purchase. Critics say that the active component of Roundup, glyphosate, leads to cancer. The firm maintained that glyphosate is safe.

Bayer itself said that it ‘contests the jury’s decision as it contradicts the substantial scientific evidence and the prevailing agreement among regulators and their global scientific evaluations… We are confident in our case for an appeal to overturn this verdict and to eliminate or lessen the excessive and unconstitutional payments it enforced.”

The German chemical firm announced that it is laying the groundwork for an appeal to the U.S. Supreme Court.
