This is evidenced by several job announcements for engineers who will work with both 5G and 6G. Four of the vacancies relate to the company's San Diego and Silicon Valley offices, where Apple is developing wireless communications technology.

"You'll have a rewarding and unique opportunity to make next-gen technology..." the job posting reads, "In this position, you'll stay at the centre of an advanced research team responsible for the next generation of breakthrough wireless technologies of the next ten years.

Late last year, Apple joined the industry group Alliance for Telecommunications Industry Solutions (ATIS), which will develop and promote the sixth generation of cellular networks.

In addition to Apple, 11 other companies joined the group at the time, including Google, HP, Intel and LG.
